On Sunday, in addition to the Sporting STL 2005 GA match, I caught the final 30 minutes of the 2008 match against Rise. The Sporting lasses won 1-0 on a late goal by Sienna Settlemoir on some fine individual play. A speedy winger, she received a square ball inside the box, looking towards the touchline. A 180 turn with the ball and a step towards goal as she shook off the defender and her left-footed shot sped past the GK in the upper 90 near post. Sweet stuff from the eighth grader who’s primary comment post-game focused on how her shoe had split on her and fortunately some tape kept it all together allowing her to deliver for her team. She’s in the middle receiving a high five (white prewrap) St. Louis Girls Academy Update
Here’s a small PHOTO GALLERY of the 2008 Sporting STL GA v Rise SC girls from Sunday. A slide show can be found at the bottome of this post.
I also promised to take a look at where things stand six weeks into the season for both Girls Academy programs here in town. The first table offers a quick overview of where each team sits in their respective age group as well as their record. For a more in-depth look at how things are going, the spreadsheet below looks at each age group separately and provides the two programs respective result against their division opponents. A bit of work so I’m halfway through, I should have it finished tomorrow. Note you can scroll down as well as to the right to see all of the fields. A final note – the team names in the left column are straight from GotSoccer so you can also see the full table for each group with the teams listed first to last.
Some trends stand out with LFA’s 2008 and 2007 programs in control of their division. Both participated in the National tournament in California last year with the 2007’s reaching the Final. For Sporting , the three oldest age groups are showing well. Here is the GotSoccer Schedule page for reference.
One final note – both programs will finish their season on the road other than one final derby match, the third of the season, on Sunday November 7th hosted at Sportport International. They wrap up the Fall season soon afterwards and will do some more travel in February before the High School season begins for most of them. No other Spring games for the youngest groups that are identified at the moment.
