The Belleville East Lancers fough back twice and rode Sr Grace Brauer’s 75th minute goal to a 4-3 victory over Class 1 Rochester on Wednesday evening at Columbia High School. Only two years removed from twice winning State (in Class 1 and then Class 2), the Rockets got goals from upperclassmen Brooke Steil, Riley Ross and Alli Jostes, opening the scoring in the 11th minute via Steil and then coming from behind themselves on Alli Jostes’ rocket from 30 yards to make it 3-3 midway through the second half.

Belleville got their first goal midway through the first half as Haley Harlan broke in on goal via Grace Brauer to tie the game at 1. The Lancers then scored a pair of goals in the first six minutes of the second half to take their first lead of the game. Harlan got her second of the match by knocking a 30 yard direct kick off the right upright, with the ball spinning backwards into the goal over the prone keeper who had just missed pushing it wide (two pics in slideshow below). The third goal was scored by Lauren Buschur when she crashed the goal, knocking in a ball that Grace Brauer had hit off of the crossbar from the right side. Great shot of her busting between a pair of defenders to get to the ball below, then being helped to her feet by grateful teammates as her momentum carried her into the back of the net.
Brauer got the game winner when she was sent into the box on the far right side. Her shot skipped along the turf into the net between the keeper and the near post for the winner.
Belleville finishes group play Thursday against Waterloo, 5:30 pm at Columbia. Rochester faces Edwardsville, at Edwardsville, also at 5:30 pm.
